Can you purchase flood insurance if a county tells you that you aren't in a flood zone?

The county I live in told my mother in law that she could not purchase flood insurance for her home, because she was not in a flood zone. Is there any way around this? Besides she said she is willing to pay for it.

An easy example of Insurance mandated by the federal government and upheld by a conservative supreme court.
I never said EVERYONE had to have flood insurance….I was stating that federally mandated insurance IS CONSTITUTIONAL as upheld by the supreme court.

My insurance agent can’t sell me flood insurance. I am not in a known flood zone. My township does not participate with the NFIP. Everyone tells me I can buy insurance but according to all the people who I have asked for it I can’t get it. If you know how, let me know, please.

I got a letter from my mtg company saying flood coverage is required. Apparently, I’m in Zone A. What can I do about this? I can’t afford hundreds in additional premiums – I already have to shell out for my mortgage, my homeowners coverage and my property taxes! Please advise.

I know that if it’s not lender (aka mortgage company) required because of your flood zone and if you currently DO NOT have a flood policy then you have to wait 30 days….but why? What’s FEMA’s reasoning behind this? Thanks!

Whats the point of this thing? Any reason I should or should not return the form? Considering the influence that insurance companies have on our government, Im suspecious that this is about insurance companies covering their butts.

The property was purchased from an individual who is toting the note for me…and he has a policy already….I would like to transfer it into my name since flooding is imminent and I don’t want him to get the check and not fix my home! Someone told me that all I had to do was go down to the insurance agency w/ the papers that show that I am the new owner and that they will transfer the policy over. Is this true? I don’t want to end up screwed!
