How is auto insurance (a contracted business service within a capitalist economy) legally enforceable?

How can a government, who supposedly stays as far out of a capitalist economy as possible, enforce that you purchase Auto Insurance? Isnt that a consumers right to buy or not buy?

One could argue that the privilege to drive at all is granted by the government, and you should abide by their requirements. But by that logic, wouldnt having insurance first be a prerequisite before you could get licensed?

I have a friend who has state farm and pays 100 a month.

Also believe it or not I have another friend who got insurance under her parents insurance company and she got a discount for it.. She is under Progressive and pay 50 dollars a month. I’m a male and I can only dream of my insurance being . That isn’t going to happen.
Is that all state?

I currently have two cars, a Toyoya and a Galant. My Auto Insurance will be renewed starting Feburary 1st which is in in about 2 days. I really think I will sell both cars w/in the next few wks(Toyota has high mileage and the Galant uses alot of gas) for a more fuel efficient car like a Honda. Is it possible to change automobiles in the middle of a coverage period? I’m not sure how it works. This is my 1st time with my own insurance. Thanks for the clarification!

I need to get my license, I own my own car and have a permit, but I can’t get a license without insurance, or insurance without a license, so I’m kind of stuck.

I just moved to a new town and don’t know anyone, so I can’t just use someone else’s car..

I know Progressive insures people with permits, but I was wondering if there were any other Auto Insurance companies that did the same, so I can compare prices.

I go to college in Alabama, but stay in Florida during the Summers. Insurance here in Florida is six times the amount it would be in Alabama. Can I get insurance there (where my car will be most of the time), and still go into Florida?

I don’t want to sound personal but I am wondering what everyone pays in car insurance. I happen to live in Michigan which has the highest car insurances rates in the country. I am planning to move soon and was wondering how much people are paying across the country. Please don’t feel a need to give me the exact number, a range is fine. Also, please tell me the car type because I know that matters. Again with car type you don’t have to tell the car. Example if you drive a 911 Porsche you could say, 2 door, luxury sports car.
