Can I get Group Insurance even Though I do my own Business?

I am based in Houston. I am just started my own business venture with my wife helping me with the accounts. Am I eligible for some insurance benefits?

Here in Houston, you need THREE employees to be a group.

I’m wondering if you are under the mistaken impression that group insurance is CHEAPER than individual insurance. It’s not. Groups under 25, are individually underwritten – every employee fills out an application and the rate is determined by averaging everyone’s health. An insurance company can REFUSE to give you a quote, for group health. And lastly, the reason it might seem cheaper when you’re an employee, is because the EMPLOYER picks up a big chunk of the tab.

Talk to the guy who does the rest of your business insurance, about getting a quote . . . but I think he’ll be pointing you at an individual plan.

You need EMPLOYEES to get group insurance plans. Different insurers have different requirements for minimum group size.

maybe thru a trade or business association – you can always buy a family policy on the open market – it will probably cost a lot more than any group plan – go for one with a high deductible – just to protect you from major medical bills
