I’m currently researching different pet insurance companies as well, and I’m probably going to go with either Pet First or Trupanion. Both of those companies have a really good track record for quick reimbursement times and are pretty reasonable when it comes to exclusions.
Most plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions, but Pet First does cover some preventative care (routine vet visits, vaccines, preventative medications, etc) which with my two dogs really adds up. I spend around $500-600 a year on preventative care for my dogs and they’ve never had a single health problem, so it doesn’t really make sense to me to pay an extra $65 a month for insurance that doesn’t cover the only medical care they ever really need, which I’m already paying for anyway.
Pet First also offers an "Accident Only" plan which is really affordable and good if you just want to be covered for emergencies. Make sure you read the terms of each policy carefully though, so you can know exactly what you’re covered for.
